Ransomware attacks hit a record 2,627 in one quarter, up 61% from a year earlier
Ransomware gangs claimed 2,627 attacks in the third quarter, up 29% from 2,030 in the second quarter and 61% from a year earlier. That works out to about 29 a day, the highest quarterly total on record.
The US took 1,066 of them, 41% of the total. Healthcare attacks more than doubled from a year earlier to 188, and attacks on finance firms rose 72% from the prior quarter, while those on technology firms rose 70%.
Key Insights
Attacks rose in all 4 tracked sectors, and finance and technology firms are now the fastest-growing business targets. Only 247 of the 2,627 cases were confirmed by victims, so the true count may differ. See how your own security exposure stacks up.
A leading chipmaker keeps $55.60 of every $100 it sells while a pharmacy services giant keeps 40 cents
Across 30 of the world's biggest companies, profit per $100 of revenue runs from $55.60 at a chipmaker to $0.40 at a pharmacy services firm, a 139-fold gap. Software ($36.10), internet services ($32.80), social media ($30.10) and consumer electronics ($26.90) round out the top 5.
An internet services giant earned $132B in profit at $32.80 per $100, more than the chipmaker's $120B. At the other end, the 4 drug distributors and pharmacy firms on the list keep $1.20 or less per $100, and the 2 big retailers keep $3.10 or less.
Key Insights
Revenue size says little about profit. Low-margin retailers and distributors keep $3.10 or less per $100 yet still earn $2B to $22B a year on sheer volume. See how your own margins stack up.
Housing and food now take 46.9% of the average US household's spending
Housing and food made up 46.9% of average US household spending in 2025, the largest share in 15 years. Housing cost $27,790, up 5.8%, and food cost $10,633, up 4.6%, with meat, poultry, fish, and eggs up 11.7%.
Average spending rose 4.3% to $81,905, while pre-tax income rose 6.4% to $110,847. The lowest-income fifth of households spent $37,935 on essentials, up from $18,125 in pre-tax income, while gasoline spending fell 5.4%.
Key Insights
Essentials take nearly half of the average budget, leaving less room for discretionary categories. Shelter costs rose 8%, nearly double the 4.3% growth in total spending, so budget pressure is still building. See how your own category demand holds up.

Market Mosaic: In your first conversation with a new client, what’s the question, or the observation, that tells you more about the organization than anything they’ll deliberately share with you?
Regina Clarkson: I listen for who they don’t mention. I ask: “Who else is working on this problem, and what are they doing differently?” If they go quiet, get defensive, or pivot to why their approach is superior, that tells me everything. They haven’t done real market mapping. Leadership is operating in an echo chamber. And the “strategy problem” they’ve brought me in to solve is usually a leadership problem wearing a strategy coat.
US factory activity climbed to 55.5% as all 5 parts of the manufacturing index expanded
The US manufacturing index rose about 1 point to 55.5% in October, near a 12-month high. Readings above 47.5% generally signal an expanding economy, and factories have now grown for 10 straight months after a 10-month contraction.
All 5 subindexes expanded: new orders, production, employment, supplier deliveries, and inventories. 5 of the 6 largest manufacturing industries grew, while a separate survey found delivery delays more widespread than at any time since 2022 and producers passing more input costs to customers.
Key Insights
Demand is broad, and supply is tight. With delivery delays the widest since 2022 and input costs rising, buyers should expect longer lead times and higher prices on factory inputs. See how your own supplier lead times compare.
Silver Miners Have Outrun Silver Since 2020
Since March 2020, silver has returned about 402%. The silver miners returned 445%.
That gap is the leverage our research team focuses on. When silver rises, a producer's net asset value can rise much faster, and share prices tend to follow. It works in both directions, and a mine is only as good as the company running it.
The Ultimate Silver Playbook shows how the team separates the miners worth owning from the rest, and which silver stocks are on its watchlist now. It's free.
